I know this might sound really strange if you have never set a healing objective, but like all things we create, clarity of intention makes a difference in healing too. Of course, creating intentions that truly motivate you is where healing objectives can help you make and see progress.
Before you grab your paper and pencil, I invite you to become very still for a moment and allow yourself to reflect on how you will feel in your body when you are well:
—Perhaps you will feel flexible in your body or have more vitality.
—Will you be sleeping better or having fun with your friends, partner, children or
grandchildren?
—Will you be digesting better?
—Will you be enjoying your body?
—Perhaps you will be feeling free again to experience the pleasure of life the way
you used to.
—Maybe you will be enjoying sex again.
—Perhaps you will be taking invigorating walks outside and experiencing greater
mobility.
Imagine and feel what it will be like to be healthy. Notice that none of the examples above use words like “pain-free,” “cancer-free,” or “done with fibromyalgia.” The reason is that these kinds of phrases are still speaking about the challenge–not the physical freedom you want to experience. Words can be motivating if the words evoke an emotional response. So if you want to feel better, it makes sense for the words you use to stimulate a positive emotional reaction.
We have very few words in the English language that describe wellness. So you may need to be creative. Consider what you will be doing, and how it will feel to be more engaged in life. If you describe the action and the feeling, you will have a healing intention that is compelling. For example, I recently chose a three-month cleansing diet with the goal that I would feel vital enough to enjoy a piece of pumpkin pie on Thanksgiving. That’s the truth. My motivator was one piece of naturally sweetened pumpkin pie! And it worked.
My intention written out as an objective looked like this: My digestion and pH balance will be so good that I will feel safe in enjoying one piece of pumpkin pie at Thanksgiving. Every choice I made during that three-month period was focused on bringing my digestive tract into balance again. My new diet and the addition of probiotics worked so well that I’m still with the program and I feel great. My new objective is to feel completely vital and healthy in my body by this summer, so that while my husband and I are traveling I will feel free to enjoy an occasional glass of wine and some flexibility in my diet to try new foods.
It is a lot easier to maintain a healing plan when you can feel a tangible goal in sight. So I make up time frames that will encourage my intuition to help me find solutions right now. I give myself something to look forward to in order to keep myself motivated. And I express the objective in terms of how I will feel when I’m well. Over the years, I’ve learned that objectives that work are ones I honestly know I can achieve.
If I tell myself I’m going to be feeling vital and my digestion working perfectly in one week and I don’t really believe it, that’s a set-up for failure. It’s far better to give myself some time and achieve my goal earlier than set myself up with an objective I’m not entirely sure I can achieve. For example, while I set a goal for this summer, I am already feeling fabulous. The herbs, energy work and diet are helping me meet my objective right now.
Would you like to create a healing objective for yourself this year? Here’s want you’ll want to do:
1) Reflect on what you will be doing and how you will be feeling when you are completely well. Really feel this as much as you are able. Write down what you will be doing and how you will be feeling.
2) Consider when you see, sense or feel yourself being in that state. Intuit (close your eyes and notice what immediately comes to mind; don’t think about this) what season, month, week or day you can imagine yourself being that well and write it down. (I recently stopped the onset of a cold in two days using this method.)
Now, of course, you want this objective working for you. Invite your intuition to guide you to exactly the right healers or treatments that will properly support you in meeting your objective. Listen to your inner wisdom and follow it. Then, feel yourself completely well as much as you can. When you feel the symptoms you don’t want, talk to or meditate with your body, and invite it to experience the complete wellness of your objective. Sense this wellness happening right now. With every ounce of your being, invite this wellness to take place in this moment. You are the master of the cells of your body, so guide your cells to the reality you are creating. Lead, nudge, and entice them to wellness.
I can hear the next question. What does it mean if I don’t meet my objective? It simply means you didn’t meet it. Evaluate what you think you need next. Do you need a more motivating objective, different timeline, or more trust? Is your body telling you it is ready to cross-over and wants you to stop pushing it? Did you just discover a proper diagnosis and found the right treatment, and now you need to be able to apply it? Evaluate and write a new objective. Objectives are simply motivating guidelines.
When you have met your objective, smile. You’ve earned the right to be delighted with yourself. Then, of course, enjoy the life you have created.
