What to Do When Fear Comes Up in Your Self Healing Journey
I received a healing question from one of the new subscribers at Inspired Healing Messages, and decided that this was universal enough I would address it in this blog post. That said, the reasons we are afraid are, in many ways, as unique as we are, and often need to be addressed individually. But let us explore the root of fear as it relates to healing.
Fear is what we experience at the threshold of the unknown. When I received the answer to one of my healing questions through a dream some years ago, I was shown that I had MS. It was fairly easy to do an on-line search to discover the physical deterioration that can occur with MS.
So, one could ask that if I knew what could happen, what did I have to be afraid about? What I didn’t know was how I would react to the limits MS can impose. I didn’t know what it would feel like in my body. I didn’t know if I would experience pain. If it eventually, claimed my life, one could argue that it would be reasonable for me to be afraid of death—one of the great ventures into the unknown.
In my personal case, I never let the thought or feeling of fear enter because I immediately gave thanks for the information my dream had given me, so that I could get right to my healing. Whenever I thought I should be afraid, I began singing compassionately to myself for healing. Within months, the symptoms were gone, in part, because I never fed the fear. However, I do understand how and why I could have become afraid.
Here are three different ways you can experience fear when you are self healing:
1. You can become fearful if you think you know what is coming, but don’t know how much you can handle. Let’s say you already experience pain, but you dread experiencing more. You don’t know how much you can take. Perhaps you have been out of pain for sometime, but the mere thought of it, scares you. You wonder how much pain you could manage if it came back again.
When we are fearful, we are often reflecting on the past and/or projecting into the future. We are rarely being present to what is actually happening in the moment.
2. Another place in which you can become fearful in regard to healing is in deciding what treatment or solution to use, and what doctor or healer to choose in supporting you. It is easy to become frozen in your tracks just trying to figure out the best path for your healing. The sense of panic that arises can keep you from thinking clearly or accessing your intuitive wisdom. It’s the panic you must learn how to be with if you want to transcend the fear.
3. You can also become frozen in fear and anxiety if you continue to dwell on mistakes of the past. Behind this fear is the assumption that you don’t know what you need to know in order to make a good decision. You are afraid you will not make the right decision, so you make no decision at all, which in effect is a decision—a decision to linger in the pain. It’s a vicious circle and when you are in pain, it leaves you trapped there.
Releasing the fear – thawing out from the pain
I recently listened to a woman describe what she has been doing to address her sense of panic. She began becoming present to the panic, compassionately holding her feeling of tremendous fear. As she continued to remain present in compassion, the fear began dissipating—slowly at first and then more rapidly—until the fear was gone.
That is precisely what I have learned to do with my fears. If I hold them in compassion and remain present to the moment, they just don’t have any way to be fed. Without being fed, fear transforms into love, peace and clarity. In fact, I now use this lovely Holding Meditation for holding any uncomfortable feelings. You can get a free audio recording of The Holding Guided Meditation.
Using any method that helps you get relaxed, helps you release the fear. Once you are relaxed, your intuitive wisdom can finally get through. This is why the second chapter of my book, The Root of All Healing is about the science behind getting into the easy and relaxed state that we experience in nature, in order to expedite your healing.
In my interviews with people I’ve discovered several ways that they get to their compassion – the necessary ingredient for fear to release.
Ways to access compassion so that you gain the clarity you need to make decisions, before you take action:
- Spend time in nature until you feel at peace
- Do something creative and fun that takes your mind off your fears; answers often come through the creative expression
- Volunteer to be of service—often in helping others you find solutions to your own challenges
- Meditate until you are calm and at peace, and your thoughts are quiet
- Chant until all that you hear are sacred sounds and your mind has quieted down
- Hypnotherapy can help you not only relax but remember and heal the original moment when your fear arose
- Journey work and guided meditations can also help you relax, remember and heal
- Energy work can help you focus loving attention on the source of your fear so that it dissipates
May I suggest that you try this for yourself. When you are feeling frozen with fear, remind yourself to open your heart, and choose a way to be present and in compassion with the fear until it begins to soften. Stay with this compassion until the fear dissolves into love. Repeat as often as necessary until your self healing journey is one based in love and fear is a response from your past.

Dear Misa,
So beautiful. These are the words of truth and I acknowledge and honor these simple words of truth and encouragement. Fear has been the root of any disease I have brought into myself. It is through breathing in the Divine and going deep into this Sacred Feminine that freedom presents herself. For me, the unknown has, can and does present the basis of unhealth within this physical body. I take that fear or the emotion into the Creation Meditiation, let it die it's death naturally. To release it in to the spiral of Light and Love and breath in my Sacred Whole…Masculine and Feminine is the crown of pure loving essence. My Self rejoices. Thank you for your words. My words come from deep within, as I allow my words to flow from our loving grandmothers, themselves. Aho!
Blessings in this Silence,
Love and Light to you,
Sandi

Sandi,
I'm so glad you shared this. So often we try to go around the fear and it rarely produces the freedom we seek. But being with our fear with compassion truly does set us free so that whatever we are doing physically to address the disease can actually work. Fears become manifest as subtle acts (and sometimes not so subtle) acts of self-sabotage. I personally believe that many of our fears originate in experiences from our past, and feel quite reasonable to us. They deserve our sincere care and attention. The Creation Meditation can be such a lovely way in which to honor our fears with respect so that they can release from us, allowing space for healing to occur. For those of you that have not experienced the Creation Meditation yet, I suggest you visit this page and scroll down to the link that says, "Download Creation Meditation Intro": http://www.newdreamfoundation.com/womens-enlighte… (Don't be fooled by the name of the link. This is for men too.)

Wow! Thank you so much, Misa! Fear has plagued me since my earliest memories and today I needed this writing so badly and deeply. I live with chronic pain and the last week has not been pleasant. Today the pain and exhaustion have continued to augment, plus a specific flare of recurring arm pain that is quite disconcerting was literally "getting on my nerves". As I read how you would sing with appreciation for healing, I began to sing a short chant (deep, soulful, reminiscent of Native American expression) and this is not something I am familiar with, and therefore is not something that I do. The tears flowed and I sang until I felt a calm release. The pain is still there, but not as intense, but mostly, the heavy burdening in my chest (fear) has lifted. I have been dealing with the specifics of your article all day – fear of my situation worsening, fear of getting better just to get worse again (both of which I've experienced), fear of my arm pain being a precursor to death, fear of not choosing the correct doctors/healers/treatments as I am researching new avenues to try (after having tried SO much). I need these words so and thank you for them.

Jules, my heart opened wide as I read your words. This place of release you described is familiar to me. It is so sweet. Isn't it wonderful how being present in the loving energies of gratitude and/or compassion requires very little effort—only our willing and focused attention—choosing to be in loving grace with ourselves. In my own experience, as the fear dissipates, the answers come. I know what healer to see, what treatment to use, the real source of the discomfort. Fear blocks our intuitive wisdom and so acknowledging it with love and allowing it to finally be at rest, opens the way to healing. I commend you for going into the fear with your love, and I honor the self-healer within you that so wisely knew how to be with the truth of who you are.
