I’m here in Paris, and it is easy to become intoxicated by the art, architecture, wine and food of Paris. Nearly every street has a sidewalk café and patisseries are almost as frequent.
The excellent coffee and croissants have been my temptation, though neither of them are particularly good for my body. Since my body didn’t seem to react very much to an espresso and croissant, I ate them three days in a row.
Have you ever done that? You know that certain foods stress your body, but think that because you were able to digest a little bit without any serious reaction that you can eat or drink a lot?
I guess I was hoping that coffee and the young wheat used in croissants would be so different here that my body would cope. That was my mistake. Within three days my nervous system was complaining with spiking pains in my hands and feet and an embarrassing moment when I had trouble forming a simple word.
As if on cue, a friend from Hungary sent me this video by Dr. David Clark, DC, explaining the relationship between wheat and coffee for those of us that are gluten intolerant. http://www.therealfoodchannel.com/page/11637.html
This video revealed to me what I intuitively knew but didn’t want to accept. There are just some food and food combinations that are not good for me.
That said, there are also foods that are excellent for me and promote my healing and well-being. When I honor my unique relationship to food, I thrive. When I don’t I suffer.
I fully expect that someday it will be common knowledge that food is not only what sustains us, but that it is also medicine. In an age when so many foods from so many places are available to us, it is easy to simply want and expect to eat whatever appeals to us.
However, if we consider that food is also medicine, then our relationship to food changes. Not only does it nourish us and please our taste buds, but used properly, food can be our healer, right along with the lovely healing herbs Mother Earth gives us.
Doctors, nutritionists and herbalists have explained to me that as we get older, we become more sensitive and need to be more conscientious about the foods we eat. That has certainly been my experience, and sometimes I’m disappointed that there are foods I can no longer eat without stressing my body.
Here is the good news about that sensitivity. It is an opportunity in my self-healing journey to truly delight in and appreciate the foods that keep my body healing and thriving.
Rather than indulging in the entire buffet, our bodies teach us to choose selectively and enjoy intimately the gifts of specific foods.
So now, as I commit to my self-healing, I’m absolutely delighting in the fresh fruits available from a local outdoor market, and the magnificent fresh figs growing on the tree outside the house where we are staying. My body is happy, I’m feeling great, and my taste buds are thrilled!

Oh, yeah, this strikes home. I am 64 now and between emotional, psychological and physical mistakes I've made I was 50 lbs overweight and physically sick. Of course, I knew better but let temptation foil me. Long story short, in order to heal my colon problems I went a vegan healing diet. Within days I felt better, had more energy and began to lose weight. I am still tempted, for instance, I attended a wedding last weekend and was faced with all sorts of food I used to eat. Now I know what's good for me and what's not so the 'not' stuff had to go in the category of 'I used to' and I was content to eat what I knew was ok for me and good for my body. Maybe I will cheat in the future and maybe I will pay the price for that but each time is a learning experience and as long as I learn I will be ok. Food is sustenance and is also medicine. We eat far too much and too many things that are not good for us. Today, foods that may have been good in the past, no longer are due to processing, pesticides, etc. (For instance, eggs have long been something I could not eat without dire consequences. Now I have found that organic eggs from a local farm do nothing to me.) So I'm trying hard to eat organic, local fruits and vegetables now. These keep me on the straight and narrow and heal, rather than make me sick. They are also satisfying and filling. Lesson learned.

Joy,
There is some interesting information about people experiencing some fabulous healing, simply by removing genetically modified foods from their diets: http://vitalitymagazine.com/article/dramatic-heal…. Looks like you’ve already figured that one out…and more!

TY for Sharing. Fruits & Vegetables are always the best for Me. If I Do eat meat I prefer Fish or Chicken instead of the other meats.

Hi Connie,
I’m meeting a lot of people that are choosing to eat lighter meats. I know people whose bodies require red meat and others that are dedicated vegans. I do believe that this earth provides what each of us needs. More than anything, the love and consciousness with which we consume life, whether that life is a vegetable or a cow, makes a difference. It is so wise to listen to our bodies and give our bodies what we need with gratitude.
